Solaris: exploring "I"

I remember the day when I first saw Solaris in my school days. The day I saw this movie  it was at midnight on home TV. Those time DD(Delhi Durodarshon) used to broadcast every Friday a wonderful movie at night 11pm, but now they are not doing this anymore. Films of great masters like Tarokovosky, bergman, fellini, Satyjit Ray etc are often broadcasted through TV. I was just mesmerized by the visual, by that night when I was alone watching Solaris, the night  all quiet in home and outside, in a cold, dark atmosphere.
Later day I discussed this film with my friends but more I was in magical trance of this movie.  This movie is visually hypnotic and thematically nearby film on love, conscience, and reconciliation. Again I have seen this movie few days back, and this time  I watched with little more maturity. Solaris is considered a science-fiction film. But not as usual known science fiction films likes Star Wars, Alien and The Terminator etc. No lesser gun, special spaceship, alien or this one nothing like a cliché science fiction.  Tarokovsky treated this movie amazingly and a genuine exploration of human life in science genre.  Solaris is the only Tarkovsky film based around a love story.
Tarkovsky writes in his brilliant book, Sculpting in Time, Solaris is only by chance a science-fiction film. He explains:
Unfortunately the science fiction element in Solaris was nonetheless too prominent and became a distraction. The rockets and space stations - required by [Stanislaw] Lem’s novel - were interesting to construct; but it seems to me now that the idea of the film would have stood out more vividly and boldly had we managed to dispense with these things altogether.
Stanislaw Lem was not agreed with output of his novel Solaris as film. There was some argument with Tarkovsky about treatment of the movie and changes Tarkovsky made. Basically Stanislaw Lem does not like the movie solaris as he said “I never really liked Tarkovsky's version of Solaris.”
But Tarkovsky is clear about this point when he writes in Sculpting in Time:
I have to say at the outset that not all prose can be transferred to the screen. Some works have a wholeness, and are endowed with a precise and original literary image; characters are drawn in unfathomable depths; the composition has an extraordinary capacity for enchantment, and the book is indivisible;
Solaris as a film ultimately came out an wonderful piece of artwork with stunning visual. Bergman stated that, “set of Solaris should be preserved.”

Tarkovsky with actors of solaris on solarisi set

Dr. Kelvin, who is a psychologist by training, as we see later in the film, is mourning the death of his wife. Two men walk up to the Chris’s house. They come to tell Chris that, “The Solaris crew is transmitting puzzling data.” Chris is to go out to the station and confirm whether this is true. If proven, the station will have to be shut down.  We see a documentary film that shows, Henri Burton, the astronaut who filmed it, is suggesting that the planet that the station orbits is intelligent. A scientific discussion that makes out that the “problem” is lies in Burton and not with the planet. The next scene, Chris in space is heading for Solaris. Once he enters the space station, Dr. Snaut tells Dr. Kelvin that one of the three men onboard has committed suicide after the “trouble” began.
And gradually we are involved and confronted with a new level of metaphysical phenomena; we see strange occurrences and uncomfortable situations that force us to make sense of our human condition, those are beyond logic. Chris attempts to solve the enigma of the “personality disorders” that the others on the station are experiencing and he found himself in the situation. The suspense and anxiety are relatively evolved around the movie and it is spreading to the viewers. Spirituality along with human physical existence is one of the dominant themes of the film. This theme is developed alongside of Chris’ internal struggle to understand his wife’s sudden appearances. The character of Chris evolved according to his internal struggles and not through outward action or in a flat presentation.
According to Gibarian what is taking place is indescribable. It is the planet solaris which is doing all this. That’s reasonable on the basis of unknown of universe and limitation of human knowledge. Here Tarkovsky present us beautifully how human fight back with strange occurrences and our understanding of core value of human existence. Tarkovsky presents the viewer with the genuine possibility of adapting a new notion of what we regard as understanding of some basics. We are not introduced to beings from another world that will enlighten us with some new truth or not knowing of some new knowledge, a discovery. It is our relationship to us, it is how we see us in a mirror, knowing us individually and spiritually, that Tarkovsky explores and reflects in his films. His concern is not with scientific exploration but with the living of homosapien and explore them and to understand them. Again Tarkovsky has done this with rational scientific approach. For which everything he does is convincing for its sets, makeup, visuals etc.
Another theme of the film is the importance of memories in our lives; this is one of core concern of solaris. Tarkovsky’s treated this wonderfully as when Chris’s wife, Hari, dies again on the space station and Chris is forced to experience loss once again. The new memories start to emerge in new situation. Chris sees Hari again when he wakes up to find a young woman sitting on a chair facing him. She comes and kisses him. When Chris asks her where she came from, she just says. “How wonderful.” And, after Chris asks her how she knew that he was there, she becomes confused and asks, “What do you mean?” Chris began to fight with his own radical mind and to resolve the situation he puts Hari on a rocket and launches her into space. Chris is reacting to what he considers a hallucination on his part and creating closure of the past. For a shock to Chris when Snaut reveals to him: “It’s the materialization of your memory of her.” Snaut explains that the problems began when “we finished the experiment of beaming x-rays down at the ocean’s surface. Apparently the x-rays enabled the ocean to explore all the little islands of our memory.” Really this one is fantastic treatment in the movie and an interesting situation as we see us in our own confrontation. Solaris is digging up us in to deeper and deeper, to our heart, to our soul, to our existence, to our love, our feelings etc..etc..to all.
Possible explanations that Chris shows onboard, he feels the emotions suck out by these experiences. The relationship that exists between his true “internal” memories and the hallucinatory, external ones is experiencing everything same as physical on the station. This is easily evidenced when Hari cannot remember or make sense of her self, or her past, because she does not exist for herself, but only for Chris with the power of solaris. When she start explores her in the regard, she finds a negation of herself. Chris initiates a conversation with Hari that may be interpreted as actually being a conversation with himself: actually with his own memories. Hari presses him to tell her what or who she really is and the film is heading in a new direction from this point. Now this is about how we are dealing with what is eternal or how we connect with others. One is how linked with another. One is how linked with another beyond physical. The being “I” is how related to “you” or “you” is how related to “me”.
Thus, the film ends as it starts, with scenes of flowing water and Chris walking around the woods by his father’s house. But his return home is more than just a physical return, now Chris is enlightened. In visiting the space station, Chris discovered a sense of cosmic mystery, the unknown, how to approach towards unknown, he discovered belief and love around this earth that he must retain in his earthly existence, even if he is in a space station light years away. This is the strongest suggestion that Tarkovsky makes at the end of the film. Chris explores the nature surrounds his father’s what is vital in human existence. At the end, Tarkovsky’s is juxtaposing final scene of what is vital and presence situation of overbroad in space station in neutral, even terrifying but brilliant way. Solaris’ ocean signifies a realm of big materialistic universe, not the other half as we know dark mater, more visual space time which related to pure consciousness, acts of awakening,  responsibilities that human govern and conduct humbly.

A hollywood version Solaris was made later, directed by Steven Soderbergh, but this one not going anywhere...as usual trapped under hollywood cliche.

Ponyo: Hayao Miyazaki's new gift

After animation masterpieces such as“Howl's Moving Castle”, “Spirited Away” etc, Ponyo is the new animated feature from master film maker Hayao Miyazaki.  Some time there are things that may be related to race and I sense it as some things are can be done only by particular race (don’t take it wrong). The movies created by Hayao Miyazaki are so fresh, so Japanese and completes with distinctively unique in style, and at the same time is universal. The creation of “Ponyo” can be only done by a Japanese.

Although creations of Moebius , Walt Disney etc. other master creator stands in different arena and  also different in style and tradition.
This old man is symbol of purity.  Beauty and treatments in his films are seems like visuals and resonance of some Haiku words. Of course also results of extreme hard work, focus and integrity.

Ponyo is a story about a goldfish named Ponyo who becomes friends with a young boy and decides to live among the humans. However, once Ponyo makes the decision it creates a crack in an ancient magic spell that puts the world order in danger.

That enormous pile of paper actually is even bigger and radiates with the devotion of Studio Ghibli's animators. About 320,000 pictures were drawn till the completion of the film and even though Ponyo's length is only 1 hour and 40 minutes, it used by far the most pictures a Ghibli movie ever needed.

Ponyo (100 min 54 sec): 170,653 pictures used

John Lasseter: Can you talk a little bit about how you develop your stories?

Hayao Miyazaki: My process is thinking, thinking, thinking. Thinking about my stories for a long time. If you have a better way, please let me know. (Comic-Con)

I do all my work by storyboard. As I draw the storyboards, the world gets more and more complex. As a result, my north, south, east, west kind of shift and go offbase, but it seems like my staff, as well as the audience, doesn't quite realize this has happened. (Press conference)

HAYAO MIYAZAKI TALKS PONYO!

Here is an conversation with Hayao Miyazaki about animation

Kelts wondered why in films like Nausicaä and even in Ponyo there's a great tsunami that threatens to destroy the setting?

Miyazaki responded that people tend to think they are separate from nature; but, he doesn't believe people are separate from nature. Nature is included within people. The nature that's inside Ponyo becomes the tsunami, which is the way she reaches the town where the boy Sosuke lives. The tsunami doesn't destroy the town or hurt the people there; it's more a magical tsunami that cleanses the town and the people who live there. Miyazaki finds hope in the power of nature.

Kelts asked Miyazaki to lay out for audiences accustomed to CGI animation what the value is of hand-drawn animation?

Miyazaki responded that-since drawing by hand can be sheer drudgery-they considered the option that it might be easier to use computer graphics. They hired a young person to explore computer drawing; but, soon realized they could draw faster by hand than by computer. For Miyazaki, it's a matter of thinking that animators should be more casual about drawing animation. He thinks an animator is more free, drawing by hand. When a character is feeling downtrodden, an animator can draw the character thin and small, and when a character is feeling full of confidence, they can draw his head bigger and show his feelings. It's difficult for computers to intuit human feelings.

The missing poetry in Terminator -Salvation

What missing in Terminator -Salvation is musical structure and the poetry that genuinely presents in Terminator 2: Judgment Day .

Again it is the influence of the Terminator 2: Judgment Day for what usually we draw in toward any terminator related films and always wish to see some visual magic, impressive presentation that we witnessed in T2. But Terminator -Salvation is just nothing but a disappointment, only some hopeless visual.

Hollywood usually always like to show fire powers, blasting, big blowing up, big fights as a core presentation in most of Hollywood productions. Sometimes it seems like exhibitions of macho USA against other countries. Diverse war equipments, variety guns etc. are frequents accessory and components of most of Hollywood films from the beginning. Latest Terminator -Salvation is just another supreme example of this show business and an example of how much it can be more dreadful. This movie depicts only some big fire show, big blowing up from start to end with great technical achievements. It is your eyes and ears that make you busy during watching of this movie, not the brain, not your feelings, intellects.

We have seen some fire shows, big blowing up in T2, yet T2 able to captured, created some great filmic scene and got some cine achievement, above all T2 is sensual in nature. The T2 remains in the true film tradition always and may be it is real film genius of James Cameroon that T2 is became a one of the true great action film in film history.

The T2 as a whole is a beautiful poetry start to end, composed in a wonderful musical structure or musical notes. Visual of T2 are polite and lyrical. Transition of shot selection is also smooth and not jerky. All scenes dominate its central intent, not allowing too much exhibitionism. We have witnessed amazing cinematography as it varied with color, tone and motif. The film was edited frame by frame, scenes are cut and joined where it needed in proper time, and not one extra single frame is added or deleted. Back ground score (including theme music) also clutched the movie in to its soul and body of the film.

After he pushed the limit of computer-generated special effects in The Abyss, director James Cameron turned his sequel to Terminator1 into a well-written, action-packed showcase with more advanced special effects. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a justifiable sequel: a story of leather-clad android that arrives from the future to protect a rebellious teenager and future leader from being killed by the indomitable T-1000 robot, whose liquid-metal design makes him apparently unstoppable and posing as a single minded lethal killer.

Though from the same director, and much of the same cast and writers, "Terminator 2" is a vastly different movie from the 1984 original. There is strong underlying message about the value of human life, to the extent that even the emotionless Terminator appears to learn sensibility as we heard in the last scene when T-800 said, "Now I know why you cry".

Sarah, is a patient at a mental institution, sentenced there after she was caught trying to blow up the Cyberdyne System, the computer company building – the company that will eventually build the SkyNet computer that responsible for starting war against human. Her son John has become a cynical teenager, who is raised by foster parents.

The two Terminators come together on John, both searching for and finding him at the mall. We also see that that Schwarzenegger’s character is here to protect John, while other one for kill.

James Cameron conceived a total package, almost two decades later, the film still looks great. The effects of the morphing terminator were so visually impressive, very much mathematical. Logically, the time-travel elements are very complex, it causes lot of ontological paradoxes and it is mingling with the idea of proper cause-and-effect and confusing.

Apart from pioneering FX work, other element that works also at best and effective is acting of the cast. One of it is Linda Hamilton's performance. She quite effectively plays the scratched rebel who's driven to do anything, no matter how terrible, to stop the war.

For all of its real entertainment value, Terminator 2 just feels in so many ways. But it may look better than its predecessor and recent sequels, but it's not a complete better film, and in many ways it's weak also. Its cautionary message falls flat as the terminator, supposedly the dispassionate voice of pure, hard algorithmic data, to make the claim "It's in your people nature to destroy yourselves." But, actual evolutionary biologists say opposite way, that human nature tends towards cooperation and compassion.

James Cameron films trapped in attempts at intellectual social commentary and in treatment mostly concentrating on the shit blowing up, big blasting, big savaging, with big technical howdy. Because, it is general believes in Hollywood that, the big shit blowing up looks really cool.

But still T2 is amazing in its structure, its poetical presence. James does not all the time allow technique to dominate his film, it his poetic visual imagery and understanding of musical notes and it application mostly controls his shots.

He able to placed himself as an artist first then we see another James Cameron with his managerial and technical entities.

Big Blow business but in control manner

Human vs Cyborg, human uncomfortable and tend to contradict with belief, choice and decision.

Machine and Human, relative adaptability, anxiety of human

Another human face in the film, this time a kid , more innocent, edgy, focus or balance point of the film

Another human face, a doctor, cynical perspective of the film, may be perspective of director too.

Another human face, cry out in nuclear destruction, trapped, powerlessness

.........................................
Feeling nostalgic…ok here is a scene link from T2.

Terminator 2 Judgment Day Intro (Theme Song)

This is title scene of the film T2. We can see here how aesthetically blended the entire shot in a musical rhythm. The  elements of park are shown in slow motion with wonderful composition while flames are in normal motion, which create a definitive lyrical blend captured through smooth camera tracking. James Cameron used flames also in lyrical manner such as it seems like some dancing flames, layer by layers it appears and goes. Sometime white and dark gray black patches of flame appears in moving around right to left, bottom to top and vice-versa.

And last but not least, added treasure in this scene is wonderful back ground score by Brad Fiedel.

Inner will of Iranian people

As everybody, every moviegoer know about Iranian films and its influences in many part of the world. Domination of Iranian movies is an usual sight in almost all film festival around the world.

Me too as a big fan of Iranian movies, watching them with uttermost interest, specially movies of Abbas Kairostami, Jafaor Panahi, Mahsin Makhmalbaf, Majid Majidi and many more. All these are part of a generation of filmmakers in the Iranian New Wave.

The Iranian government has refused to permit the screening some of their films in their native Iran and banned their some of movies. It is after math of Islamic revolution in Iran that created few path for new explorations, bringing rich historical Sufi influences in their films and new innovative method of film making that perused by most of Iranian film makers today.  Instead of luxury and sophistication of big studios, without technical significance or technical extravaganza Iranian directors looks in to more in social realism and find some wonderful way to making a film.

Very interesting way Iranian movies are experimenting with new styles that are varied with different layers of life of many commoner of Iran. Critics such as Jonathan Rosenbaum  argues that disagreements and controversy over Kiarostami's movies have arisen from his style of filmmaking because what in Hollywood would count as essential narrative information is frequently missing from Kiarostami's films.

Apart from Kiarostami other his contemporary also almost began to consciously avoid and ignore what usually called as a popular narrative structure of film making. They bring out and explored those idioms and inner voices of Iranian people that hidden and suppressed under Iranian authorities and far right regime. And the best part of it they embraced a method what is called as a social realism. They used actors from ordinary life, their actor talked in bressonian way. They shoot film on real location, real situation. They are filming a scene in a documentary style but still remains far away from an objective docu-drama. What is unveiled through their film is spirit of Iranian people, inner will of Iranian people, soul of Iranian culture, above all reverberation of an universal appeal.

What we have witnessed now, the volcano already erupted in Iran in the form of mass uprising, sign of it already captured on many Iranian new wave films.

Here is a disturbing video, in perspective of a film its a tragic example of ultra realism which really gone too far, but captured something raw truth in the name of information and objective use of a technical tool .

Salam Bombay, Slum dog millionaire and Slum Trade

Long ago a book is written by one of the influential filmmaker, composer, and artist, author Satyajit Ray. The book made it clear and point out about duel position of Indian cinema. Our Films, Their Films” is a collection of insightful, contemplative, and revealing critical essays and personal memoirs by Satyajit Ray. Ray's concise, candid, and often thematically overlapping expositions on Indian and international cinema reveal original sensibilities in his own evolving creative process, also a refined, accessible approach towards the aesthetic appreciation of all forms of art - that shape the logical arguments of his film criticism.

Despite a deep admiration for several key works of international cinema, Ray offers an instructive analysis on the pitfalls of blindly imitating contextualized, foreign aesthetic conventions in the creation of an indigenous cinema.

"The present blind worship of technique emphasizes the poverty of genuine inspiration among our directors. For a popular medium, the best kind of inspiration should derive from life and have its roots in it. No amount of technical polish can make up for artificiality of theme and dishonesty of treatment. The Indian filmmaker must turn to life, to reality. De Sica, and not De Mille, should be his ideal."

Amitabh Bachchan, a famous Bollywood actor said in his blog, “If Slumdog Millionaire projects India as a third-world, dirty, underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations.” Mr Bachhan’s statements are absolutely right and raise the question why they (west audience) don’t love to watch their existing murky underbelly.

Other way, as we can see now more of Bolliwood film are made on foreign location, exotic foreign location such as New York, Switzerland, newzeland, Australia etc. Those stories of the Bolliwood films are painful irony of Indian realities. More blonde haired ladies are required or used in song-dance scene to entertain Indian audience. More melodrama, more circuses are used in these lollipop/popcorn entertainment. So what are the Bolliwood’s realities? Bunch of some illogical but slick, glossy extravaganzas, those are mostly imposed to audience in the name of films.

Ray suggest in that book: "What our cinema needs above everything else is a style, an idiom, a sort of iconography of cinema, which would be uniquely and recognizably Indian."

So, are Indians simply so hung up about a 'phoren' (Foreign) degree, blind influence, copying films, they want one even though they have no claim to it? Is this proof Indian love all things 'phoren'? Or do we have a talent and aptitude for deception and fakery? "Foreign things have a status value which the swadeshi doesn't," says social scientist Shiv Vishwanathan. In other words, it is another instance of our love of the foreign tag, a colonial hangover. And "It just shows their hypocrisy.”

It is very nice to see porn movies of others but dirt start hitting the roof when you got to see some one you know. The Times rightly reported in one of the articles written by famous columnist Alice Milles, Slumdog Millionaire is poverty porn. Same way most Bolliwood movies are rich porn. A world placed beyond the realities and very much rich in vision with total escapism.

For the majority of western audiences who are writhing under the excruciating weight of a global meltdown, a fairy tale about the ugly side of India should certainly come as an orgiastic catharsis! “Slumdog Millionaire” seems considered as one of the most superfluous fantasies to be created about India in the 21st century. So it should only be expected that American audiences would love to see films about India which conform to their image of the third world familiarize. The real ‘American’ films would make no sense to Indian viewers while the typical Bollywood melodrama would make no sense to the west. So while “SM” granted big hit in the U.S. today and the venerable Oscar committee is worshiping this movie. Then what is it? Effect of recession, Obama effect!! Change in attitude/perspective.

Again as a cinema SM failed at first term, as the Hindi-speaking kids fall off a train in front of the Taj and, they start speaking English! They are speaking good English. A wrong grammar used in this film. This question would not even come up if the film was a pure caricature but unfortunately the film also seems to have fallen prey to the dictates of psychoanalytical “western realism”. Western realism with more sophistication, so while watching it someone is gets easily fooled by its vision. Big fat pathetic irony is here that western audience also trapped in sophisticated vision, subjective outlook. They fall in subjective treatment of life and melodramas as Indian audience already swim on it.

The Beach by Danny Boyle, Controversy arose during the making of the film due to 20th Century Fox's bulldozing and landscaping of the natural beach setting of Ko Phi Phi Lee to make it more "paradise-like". The production altered some sand dunes and cleared some coconut trees and grass to widen the beach. Fox set aside a fund to reconstruct and return the beach to its natural state, however lawsuits were filed by environmentalists who believed the damage to the ecosystem was permanent and restoration attempts had failed.

28 Days Later, Set in Great Britain, just after the turn of the 21st century, the story depicts the breakdown of society following the accidental release of a highly contagious virus and focuses upon the struggle of four survivors to cope with the ruination of the life they once knew.

In Sunshine, the script was based on a scientific back-story that took the characters on a psychological journey. The director cast a group of international actors for the film, and had the actors live together and learn about topics related to their roles, as a form of method acting.

So Danny Boyle has his approach while making a film. And all of them flourished with under influence British romantic colonialism. Of course those are good movie, sophisticated, and made with professional approach, made in hand of fantastic professional crew. But SM still loses its authentication in terms of real motif. Resonance of real motif reflected here as, In the film City of Joy, on the other end of Calcutta, disillusioned Texas doctor Max Lowe (Patrick Swayze) has arrived in search of some spiritual enlightenment after the loss of a patient, Max begins to fit in with his fellow slum-dwellers. And he begins to see that his life isn't half bad. There are many around him whose lives are much worse, but they look on each day with a hope that gives new strength to the depressed physician. While Bolliwood movies continue living with lot different kind of cliché, these India oriented Holliwood movies are also deployed some kind of cliché. Which are so called "enlightenment", "learning life from poor", "spiritualism" etc. etc.

Even one of the great film makers of Iran, Mahsin Makhmalbaf failed to make his command over his India oriented movie “scream of ant”. He falls to same kind of cliché; his movie may be not much in to sophistication or professionalism but to the exclusionary reality and hallucinationary vision.
Years ago another SM kind of movie, Salam bombay, The film chronicles the day-to-day life of children living on the streets of Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay). Salaam Bombay is the story of Krishna, Manju and other children living hand-to-mouth on the streets of Bombay. Sometimes they can get temporary jobs, but mostly they have to beg for money and keep out of the way of the police. Slums as a lucrative target as always, fit for depicting exclusionary reality and slums is only one side of vivid, layered Indian society. Comparatively easy to tackle it in any medium then faces a multilayered complex Indian society. So approach/perspective toward slums definitely is a big trade or big fry for international market. Cliché about India, more about slums as slums still rule as an easy goal and any art house camp make something out of it. May be a film, may be a painting, may be photography etc.

Again if we recall Ray, it’s all about perspective, "our perspective" and "their perspective". But both dwell with same mind-set, upper layered fantasy, market, profit etc.

GHAJINI in rat race

Now watching a movie also is a part of rat race. “Ghajini” released and lot happening on media, mall/multiplex and news papers, showering reviews etc. Every body wants a ticket and wants to be inside the theater hall. More then the movie it is all about capture the  moment and occupy a seat and have some popcorn, and spent there 3 hours.
A is going for the “Ghajini”, B is going for the “Ghajini”, so C must need to go for “Ghajini”.
So watching this film is some kind of having orgasm. Its great relief as someone just finished watching “Ghajini”.

I don’t know about the film “Ghajini”, just heard about it as a revenge story or blahh blahh..blahhh.. …..Dance-songs….blah blah.. And idea is taken from Christopher Nolan’s “memento”…blahh..blahh...hair style gimmick..blah...blah...8 pack gimmick..blah.blah.....

But this guy who acts in this film his name is Amir Khan, he knows business, he knows marketing. As per all popular media Amir Khan is special, special about his acting, his talent, his perfections etc. So of course he is special about promoting his product too and how to sale a product like a hot cake.
Amir Khan's Strategy was really amazing with a different perspective.
He knows South Indian film business. He understands popularity and demy god status of South Indian super stars like Rajani Kant and Kamal Hasan.
So penetrate south film domain and get a straight way success is not much as easy. But Amir Khan done that with some very much calculative moves (one example: months ago he attends a prize distribution ceremony in south India where he cried)
A totalitarian marketing, propaganda all works and “Ghajini” able to conquered Pan Asian film market. He able to place himself in South film domain along side those demy gods of South Indian film domain.

“Mr Amir Khan, mission accomplished”.

The Day the Earth Stood Still: Human vs GOD alike alien

"yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya
tadatmanam srjamy aham

paritranaya sadhunam
vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya
sambhavami yuge yuge"

A sloka from Bhagavad Gita

[Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion--at that time I descend Myself.
In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium.]

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" reminds me the above sloka from Gita as Clatu an alien messenger in human form threatens to destroy the human. Because human are damaging the earth by mean of war, environmental disaster, nuclear weapon etc.
Clatu seems like here mostly an “avatar” from Indian Hindu mythology. He is an advanced alien, more like a GOD kind of as his powers shows his super ability. Even Helen’s stepson Jacob asks him to breathe life into his father and awake him from the cemetery. Clatu answered him mysterious way that some things are can’t be done. But he has not said that, this is not in his ability to breathe life into a dead person.
Director of the movie resist the temptation in the film to portray USA as embody of human of the earth. When Clatu asked the United States Secretary of Defense, that "do you represent all human", she answered “no, I represent president of USA”. Some year back we saw in the movie “independence day4”, president of USA declared ID4 will be Independence Day of all human as they were fighting against alien invader.
This time Clatu also surprised when he heard as the secretary says  “our earth”. He replied to her “do you think earth is owned by human”. These are some wise progress in Hollywood  scripts in today's scenario and able to realize that human lives outside of USA also and not all of them are backing all US policy whether if USA fight against the alien then also.

The presence of the sphere (the spaceship) has caused a worldwide panic. Panicky is an average  syndrome
seen in the most Hollywood films. War of the world, independence day4 etc are some example of this syndrome. Military operation, military action seems like solutions to all. Exhibiting weaponry is a tag of most of the films and they portray  the military might when ever there is a scoop for it.
Human panicky is authentically visualized but not a resistance or an organized mass mobilization.  An organized people resistance is never seen in Hollywood movies easily. Heroes can be seen but not an organized people. Heroes are mostly with supreme individualistic values and they defend it at any price, at any situation. This panicky phobia is a general syndrome which ascends from a capitalist system which also mass media related and a controlled phenomenon.

Helen is begging Clatu for a chance for human to remorse. After discussion with Professor Barnhardt and witnessing human values through Helen and Jacob, at last Clatu decide not to wipe out human from this earth, instead he learn something, how a species learn to behave when it going through a crisis. These are amazing situation for forgiveness from an alien. Lesson learned by human as Clatu put a message for puny human and returned to his own zone.

Yes, crises are not analyzed, but all felt. Actually whole earth feels the heat of global crisis in all ground right now. In the film Helen is not a hero fight against Clatu and save the earth but a human, who is begging for mercy from a GOD alike alien. Finally a message is established as human (all human) now ready to take up the question of crisis through self realization, self criticism. This of course good to see, but blame all human categorically is not as easy to digest. There is scene when we see Clatu listen something with so much concern. Helen says “this is music of Bach”. Only distinctive and authentic message is heard here. Or we can say “Bach” is human answer to Clatu, in fact what ever supremacy he poses.
On contrary, “Bach” is one of the actual domination of human on space or  on earth and human as a species who not only learned to destroy own self but also create things that from raw earth.

the spiderman: poor guy, doing right and wrong

Peter Parker is exploring his struggle with his great power for great responsibilities. He took his aunt to bank for a loan which was not sanctioned. Peter Parker's best friend in high school and college, Harry Osborn plays a critical role throughout all three films.  A rich guy Harry sacrificed his life for Peter in a melodramatic way. This brilliant but lazy student is selling pictures of his own stunts and always hunting for a good job. J. Jonah Jameson not interested in artistic photographs of Parker, so those are not sold. He has employed by Ajij as pizza boy and fired again.  He borrowed money from secretary of J. Jonah Jameson for his daily survival. Peter Parker is not sure about his relationship with Marie and Marie Jane Watson also puzzled with those relationship with Harry, son of Jonah Jameson and Peter Parker.

Peter Parker and his dilemma (good, bad, money, love, hate, rent, bills, books, good, gas etc……)

Aunt May has choice and she is doing right things, Harry Osborn and Norman Osborn has choice and they are doing right things and other most of all characters of Spiderman movies usually are doing right things, at least what they have thought is right. But Peter is struggling with his wrong and right always. Peter Parker is a talented  student who thinks about his career and wants to earn a good living also but all is not happening. His aunt not able to give some good bucks as birthday gift also. What ever he got all is taken by his neighbor as house rent. But still he is “your friendly neighbor” as he saved some one from street muggers and has super human strength to stop a train. But He is not getting a good job because most companies are abandoning cities and sprawling onto farmland. Companies are outsourcing jobs offshore. Companies not creating any new jobs, even some which are actually laying people off. Others that just move jobs from one place to another, where they are proclaimed to be “new.”

Hillary Clinton’s message while supporting Obama, "to renew the promise of America, to rebuild the middle class and sustain the American dream, to provide opportunity to those who are willing to work hard for it and have that work rewarded, so they could save for college, a home, and retirement, afford gas and groceries, and have a little left over each month.”

The situation and time Peter indulges in is time of globalization. His fears are graver as a loyal New Yorker then his concern for his foes and that very natural. Imperialism is not a policy. It is a stage of capitalist development, an objective process. The same is true of capitalist globalization. It is not a policy of this or that government. It is an objective process of transnational capitalist development. This distinction is important to understanding the class struggle today. Government policies have impact on how capitalist globalization proceeds, as long as capitalism is the dominant economic system, its globalization will continue. In the meanwhile larger and larger sections of labor are beginning to see the connections between war and capitalist globalization.

Spiderman, His foes are usually all good human being, not like those evil war lords of Afghanistan, terrorist or natural born criminal like joker. They became unlawful and dangerous because of circumstances. Norman Osborne became Goblin because he lost his deals, his share in his company. Dr. Otto Octavius who believe knowledge should used for human benefit became Doc Ock  because he is under influence of artificial intelligence. Flint Marko who actually did not intend to kill Parker’s uncle, but circumstance did. And he also became Sandman because of a scientific accident and he engaged in robbery as he wants money for his sick daughter.
Eddie Brock Jr. colleague of Peter Parker, he was humiliated by Peter and became Venom under influence of alien organism.

So all are ultimately forgiven and they are basically good people. They pay taxes and they have family. So they bound to be political too.

Eddie Brock Jr. is an opportunist but Peter Parker may walks with these protesters.

It is not sure for which camp Bruce Wyne or Tony Stark  throws a fund raising party.  But no doubt in November instead of fighting each other ,Venom and Spiderman can be seen on the rooftop of vote casting building and they both will be on queue for cast their vote for Obama. “Job outsourcing”, "working class" etc  issues are already in agenda of Obama. Peter Parker may not able took decision on different mater and sometime trapped in confused circumstances, but this time he will be sure for his own sake and own survival.
“The spiderman" movie series are brilliant for its technical input, totality, actions, sets, camera work, some part of acting etc……with all way perfection.

The Incredible Hulk: Unorganized and unused anger

'To the clean are all things clean' — thus say the people. I, however, say unto you: To the swine all things become swinish! Therefore preach the visionaries and bowed-heads (whose hearts are also bowed down): 'The world itself is a filthy monster.' For these are all unclean spirits; especially those, however, who have no peace or rest, unless they see the world FROM THE BACKSIDE — the backworldsmen! TO THOSE do I say it to the face, although it sound unpleasantly: the world resembleth man, in that it hath a backside, — SO MUCH is true! There is in the world much filth: SO MUCH is true! But the world itself is not therefore a filthy monster!
                                                                                                                                 -----  Friedrich Nietzsche

Bruce was conducting research for the Army under the supervision of general whose daughter, Betty was Bruce’s girlfriend. The experiment went horribly wrong and Dr. Bruce Banner, belted by gamma rays, turns into The Hulk, a green monster. Bruce escaped to Brazil, where he in a hillside slum and works at a soda factory.
And the general just after him and orders his army to capture him when he learns of Bruce’s whereabouts. A human Bruce became an official living project as his blood contains seeds of super strength. General Ross wants what's inside Bruce's body to replicate it and create a team of super soldiers.
Superhero movies depend not only on vivid special effects or action set pieces, but also basically a psychological drama of existential division. And it was tried here also as an approach to achieve a realistic outlook. But the contradictions and continuities between Bruce Banner and the angry monster he becomes figure very less in “The Incredible Hulk. Only two things revealed as one is calm, obedient Bruce and other is a confused angry soul.
” When Betty asks Bruce what the transformation feels like he answers that the Hulk “isn’t me,”

So who is he?

Dr Bruce Banner, a humble, talented and loving civilian

The Hulk, an individualistic anarchist

Bruce Banner a harassed middle class person who is constantly on running from authority. And The Hulk is basically a result of angry Bruce, when he found that harassment is crossing his limits of control. Hulk’s anger is so huge that he just destroys all things in front of him mercilessly and what he seen as imposing ruthlessness, perhaps torture. A team of soldiers, including slightly crazy Emil Blonsky is after him by order of the general. Blonsky later became another monster, The Abomination, nemesis of the hulk. Although he is there on physical level, prime opponent is always the general or the army authority to Bruce Banner and his Anger alter ego. The hulk phenomenon is kind of revolt against an authority and imposing rules.
As Bruce not able to do anything, his let his anger to do things. But His angry alter ego is uncontrollable in power and destruction and in nature is sadistic and brutal. He destroys all things he faces. Although a love power is shown as Betty can able to calm him down. But his destructive characteristic is always remains.
That limitless anger evolved from where or why. As it rooted deep in unconscious mind of Bruce banner and that anger unleashed through a different identity and walks alone with only motif that is destroying and fulfilling his outburst of depression and harassment. This is not outburst of public anger or depression, but attitudes which support the elimination of all. Position of Bruce resembles to same as a harassed civilian. His anger side is supporting anything from extreme individualism to complete collectivism. A tendency of destruction erupted as we see when individual conscience and the pursuit of self-interest constrained by any collective body or public authority. Individualist anarchism is supportive of property being held privately, unlike the social/socialist/collectivist/communitarian wing which advocates common ownership. The hulk is "egoist" form of individualist anarchism according to which the only limitation on the rights of the individual is his power to obtain what he desires.
Dr. Bruce Banner, a humble, talented and loving gentleman from middle class section, he hides inside him a profound nihilist as THE hulk. As a nihilist perspective objective morality of the hulk does not exist. In the absence of objective morality, existence has no intrinsic higher meaning or goal. No moral obligation to follow anything.
Yes, Betty is there as a healing catalyst to hulk and Bruce is trying to control his agony or his senseless transformation as hulk and whether he recovers from it, whether he becomes master of this crisis, is a question of his strength.

“The Incredible Hulk” is brilliant for its technical input, totality, actions, sets, camera work, some part of acting etc……with all way perfection.

the iron man: Aggression of competitiveness

Charming “playboy” Tony Stark, another “billionaire industrialist” like “Bruce Wyne” is visiting Afghanistan to demonstrate a guided missile (a product of his own “Stark Industries”), Tony Stark gets kidnapped by insurgents. He wakes up in a cave, where a good Afghan civilian has inserted a magnet in his chest to keep him alive. Kidnapper order Stark to build a missile for them.

Rest is as a new person is born and became a modern messiah as “iron man”.
With newly found conscience (when he Tony Stark decides to do different things as IRONMAN). He saved some peoples in Afghanistan with his might, (perhaps with money and influence).  Again he ready to play at home state to battle against illicit shipments and wrong deals.
Unlike “the dark knight”, the “iron man” is more about power share, influence and aggression. Competitiveness erupted as film plot deploy a situation of a deal with terrorist as client of products. It can be seen as the awareness of both the limitations and challenges posed by global competition as the private sector faces significant barriers to competing in domestic and international markets. Tony Stark determines to stop production of weaponry because failure of a product and its monopoly trade value.
Ok… ok we were shown that he stop production for his conscience.
Resources (capital, labor, technology) and talent tend to concentrate and dominate geographically. And firms are embedded in inter-firm relationships with networks of suppliers, buyers and even competitors that help them to gain competitive advantages in the sale of its products and services.
It is desire of monopoly as always it required for any industries; Tony Stark is ready to start a new venture.  A billionaire hero is saving world from terrorist or war lords playing with something likes video game. This time not as NGO works or social service like Bruce Wyne does, but a more serious game for survival in the market competition.
As a hero “iron man” phenomenon is not similar to “the dark knight”. No kid in the “iron man” to be overwhelmed by Tony Stark, but “iron man” has his capacity lured the audience with his glamour, fashion and glossiness of life styles. As situation proceeds a hero indulges in a domain of influence, power share and dominance.  As he deals with more with those things we don’t know how he saved people and (as in comics or print) or as a hero how he deals with common disaster like high inflammation, food crisis etc.  But as a “billionaire industrialist” it is justified, view point and policy of Tony Stark toward these problem as usual and of course he must has some funding program.
Ok… ok we were not shown about this and contrast of duel identity of an industrialist is not concern of the film.
But the situation like terrorist problem economic dealings and other related economic paranoia are association of reality.  An approach to make “iron man” more realistic is reverberated with picture of a contemporary social order and hegemony.  And we hypnotized by him as he played different video game but the metaphor that echoed full aggression of competitiveness, desired monopoly gone unnoticed.

“the iron man” is brilliant for its technical input, totality, actions, sets, camera work, some part of acting etc……with all way perfection.

the dark knight: Amateurism for control and how to promote a product

A hero who likes to terrorize civilian (riding through a street with his motorcycle, destroying everything what in front of him) in the name of save a city. A hero who is a billionaire fights against the crime to holding law and order. The Joker who just represents chaos and destruction is causing the hero to be a hero again. The character of Joker is glamorized through out of the film. More evil he does, more romanticized and stylized appeal in the scene. Some time he is more influential then “Batman”. Joker, a messenger of chaos and seems to be a manipulation master. But his role is limited to these all. He is not in industry business or does not have any control anxiety and he does not owned any products to promote, only few knifes and very much depend on street thugs to execute things. But  Bruce virtually own GOTHAM city and he always intend to control it and never tolerate any body who challenges his authority, his establishment and his business like a true billionaire. He own Gotham as Bruce Wyne and he control Gotham as batman. He is more like a king to the city in the movie called “the dark knight”.

A realistic approach to make “batman” more human and more contemporary is bounced back with natural social stigma. The film is reflecting a world of corporate business and new economic paranoia. A show business of products (his car, bike,  weaponry, etc. More enemy = more products = more invention = more promoting tactics = more market control)

He (Bruce Wyne) is great on comics’ book, on print media. Tim Burton’s "batman" movies are comfortable to watch for their look, style and adaptation of a comic alike imaginary world.
Now when this “the dark knight” is dealing more with reality, he provoked and established some things that purely matching to frequency and wave length with WTO and a system which concerned with dominance and control. In joker we see, he is not after money like an average criminal but more a psychopathic criminal who always intent to destroy and taking pleasure from it. A city mayor “Harvey dent” is a failure, people are killed by chaos. So “the dark knight” is fancy to tackle it with his amateurism. His amateurism (professional one is Wyne Industry)  more like a NGO works for a society by a billionaire.

Now when leaving the theater hall after watching “the dark knight”, I observed some kids, they overwhelmed by the film's hero. And when batman becoming more realistic, those kids became more imaginative  toward reality and at the same time they are draining their self confidence gradually. it is like not believing on own self but believing some one who is about to falling from sky and going to help them, do something for them.
On larger scale if taken “the dark knight” is an obvious film that bound to happen this way on the Hollywood. But it is also perfect visuals of an acclaim ruling order and not to forget what evoked through under tone of the film (as characters are more from  a society) are paranoia, disorder and control.
As always favorable “the dark knight” steals self confidence from deep in heart of the audience which they unaware of. As someone nobody to a society as always stand on a street while “the dark knight” riding through and destroying everything in front him, as he thought that an obstacle to him  to place his mark and a warning to remind people that they bound to depend on him, on his control and on his products.
At last scene as we see Commissioner Gordon (represent an authority of a public domain) submissive and surrendered to “the dark knight” and what he said to his son can be described this way, “look at your hero, a billionaire in disguise, saving a city, doing his social work and at the same time promoting his products.” And his son (the kid in the film) overwhelmed by “the dark knight” same way as those kids (the kids in the real world) in the theater hall  with fascination and  became acquiescent to imposed charisma and control.

“the dark knight” is excellent(not Batman which I consumed from print) for its technical input, totality, actions, sets, camera work, some part of acting etc……as these perfection are always achieved by the Hollywood.

Anatomy of Hell: an another dimension but a foul play

It has gotten a lot of bad reviews; accusing writer-director Catherine Breillat for made a movie which is pretentious, perverse and ridiculous.
Breillat adapts her own novel “Pornocracy”, kicks things off with the in-your-face symbolism of a beautiful Girl (Amira Casar) standing alone and ignored in the middle of a gay nightclub. Instead of going home she does the next best thing-she trots upstairs to the bathroom and slashes her wrists. As the bright red blood drips prettily onto her pure white outfit, she is rescued and patched up by the Guy (Rocco Siffredi), a gay with a pronounced revulsion for all things feminine and female. In gratitude, she offers him a deal, she will pay him to come to her isolated beachside home over the course of four nights and she placed the idea and deal, “watch me where I’m unwatchable”. Offering detailed critiques of the “obscenity” of the female form and modify or reinvent his perception. The rest of the film is dedicated to the four meetings, a battle of the sexes in which words are the primary weapons. The Guy talks about how the female body inspires only “disgust or brutality” or how the sight of a woman’s genitalia reminds him of a particularly ugly frog. And in reciprocal note the Girl offers such insights as “Man can’t give life. He takes it” while flashing back to traumatic memories of her childhood. Of course, invoking the situation the mere words are not always enough and that is when they climbing up to deploying such items as “lipsticks”(most acclaimed and favorite tool of women) and “gardening tools” in wildly unanticipated ways. According to one dialogue again the Girl offers such insight that women are suppressed, not get their freedom because man locks all their holes. After first meeting the Guy indulges in oral sex with the girl, second night in anal sex then third night in straight sex when she having her Menstrual period. Causing her released bloods and his penis stained with these bloods. Although this blood not coming from his penis, its more of an assimilation of two body, the girl proclaim this way in her statement after having straight penetration in to her in her Menstrual period and before the penetration they both drink Menstrual blood as token of mutual deal.
In scientifically nothing wrong in having sex on menstrual period of woman but mostly it’s a taboo on sociological or religious grounds. In interview Catherine Breillat said that she having problem while shooting this film because some of her crew were catholic and they does not feel comfortable on shooting. Actually portrayal of this scene does not mean any assimilation or solidarity (in very diplomatically). Here women can feel deep in psychologically that they abandoned in these 3days from society, love, and children and from this earth also. Abandoned and thrown so sense of insecurity, loneliness and losing purity that enjoyed by children and men. And they feel disgusted too so in balance claimed that “Man can’t give life. He takes it” so woman does that ability to create. But those philosophical, symbolic interpretations are complete contrast to nature and law of evolution.
If we taken here film “In the Realm of the Senses” where Nagisa Oshima tried to build up a harmony, searching for symphony between man and woman while Catherine Breillat invoked conflict and contrast in her film.
This symbolic interpretation for repression is not only ignorance of natural law of physical science but a self made imposition which nothing but lack of knowledge of socioeconomic background or proper historical materialism.
Again in one statement the girl said that when intercourse can’t do on period those 3 days are only period for woman. Of course freedom of woman does not differ from socioeconomic background or ignoring it causes dangerous diversion from reality of life in any form of art. And exercising it, ignoring facts is just a luxury. For which any claimed film craft can floating on fake air without any firmly rooted on soil.
As director herself a woman this film is very much self mockery on woman. Later part of film is like some lesson to male domain how to know more of them. After giving those lessons when male protagonist is awaked about woman, he found she is lost, even he does not know her name. But he ultimately feels with her and end of this realization she vanished mysteriously. More then self mockery this is little ridicules or can be said that imposing alien status on woman and they mean to be always mysterious.
“Anatomy of Hell” is not for everyone and even the majority of those brave enough to seek it out are likely to walk away filled with either disgust or boredom. If you have “18+ and above” certificate of age, this does not enough for entering to theatre and watching this film. This film doesn’t suitable for who may 40 above also. “Adults only” is not sufficient criterion for this film or this genre. It not possible to expecting all audience should be medical student with objective look as they observe and study a human body part or genitals of human. It is more like battle within, facing own moral ethics that governed by society. Same time in the globalization context, in the era far capitalist activities, most intimate acts and relationship of human are already industrialized, exposed and became commodity so obviously a war within own self with morality and ethics which may depend and varies different local to local or culture to culture.

This is not another bad review about this film, but appreciation to Catherine Breillat for her firm belief in this new genre of film making. The film is completely objective, raw and honest on its motif and vision. It’s her brave attitude to portray a woman completely in different perspective. As long as women most commonly used as commodity for many purpose, even male directors put some care on woman character, Breillat tried to deliver a different message and disclosed a new chapter of womanhood.

In the Realm of the Senses: an another dimension

Is “In the Realm of the Senses” pure artistic expression or a hyped porn film? That is the debate that has always followed ‘In the Realm of the Senses’, since its release in 1976.
Actually this film extended the boundary of film craft further more. The film is Honest to its core and very objective in nature and attitude.
Based on the true-life 1930s story of Sada Abe and her lover Kichizo Ishida, Nagisa Oshima’s film contains many scenes of un-simulated sex, both between the main two characters and a number of the less-prominent roles. “Explicit scene” is the only base upon which all arguments existed or the film was banned. By overcoming those “Explicit scene”, the film pushing itself furthers more, beyond contemporary film ethics. So there is a demand on viewer how to accept it is depending on own ethics of viewer.
The film is an example of truly honest piece of filmmaking. Those real sexes as actors acted upon it were very important part of the film. Objectiveness and raw sensitivity of these scenes were not provocative but viewed as human acts in desire. Showing genitals of both man and woman and penetration does not swipe it to a porn film but very wise depiction of human acts same as like eating, fighting etc. As those scenes not choreographed for purpose of only sex acts and profit making porn business, it can be separated from porn tag. Again this film differs from documentary because the film deploys very firmly human emotion like passion, love, jealousy etc. on its own terms.
The story of Sada Abe, the plotline of the film revolves around her relationship with Kichizo Ishida, a married man, a land lord, who is the owner of the hotel where Abe (a former prostitute) has recently been employed as a maid. One morning, with another maid, they sneak out to Ishida’s dwelling, where they both watch him make love to his wife. Sada’s eyes light up and it is at this point that her obsession with Ishida begins and its increases with time mathematically like 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10...........to infinity.
The constant nature of their sexual activities, along with the way in which their bodies almost become one, is really amplified by the graphicness of the sex scenes frame by frame with calculated manner. All frame fit to proper visual and proper angle. Never used unnecessary shot to provoke or exhibits unauthenticated sex acts which can be seen as purposeless. Selecting of frame and angle is tightly mathematical with time passes and all scenes contain only required frame angle and objects of body. The penetration shown only in last sex act when Sada is strangling Ishida while making love to him. With top angle it quietly reflects two fatal acts, desire and killing, penetration and strangling. Two humans actually engaged in the act of sex, with no limitations, or reservations about their bodies, the film manages to perfectly portray the desperation that Abe has to be with Ishida, and how she feels completely at one with him. The slight boundaries that were initially in place between them are constantly broken, and even food is brought into the love making process. Smell also part of mood and ambience of the film as we see in one scene where the pensive Sada turns away a maid offering to clean the room. When told that it smells, Sada replies that "We like it". And she is disconsolate when she returns to find that the room has been cleaned in her absence, and their carefully cultivated smell is gone. She became violent again fearing losing Kichizo Ishida. The ingredient for self-destruction is sealed the moment, violence gets brought into the relationship, and with Abe’s increasing jealously at the thought of Ishida with other women, the tension in the final scenes of the film is almost fatal and self-destructive.
Oshima was sticking to his principles and while executing the film in the manner that he reflected the state of the relationship between two human (Abe and Ishida) through film very different in perspective but honest. It is certainly a highly emotional experience, and one that will have audience on tender hooks all the way until the inevitable ending. The shocking, controversial and influential film that outraged censorship boards the world over, and was banned for twenty years. This film does not attempt to treat Sada's sad history, her background, something that may explain her odd behavior. Far from pretending to be a documentary, this view considers only the snippet of life between Sada's first meeting with her lover and acts between them to the end of physical existence of Ishida. But this short snippet of Sada's apparently long life is full of action. And director Oshima uses this action to try to lure audience into the heady, raw sensual world inhabited by a man and a woman.
It was mostly said that strangling Ishida to death by Sada was final act of their desire and wish for to be one and to attained extreme pleasure. But scene before final act we see Kichizo Ishida on the street was walking opposite to marching of soldiers. Walking opposite side of the street from people alone, and expression on his face is sad and feared. This scene was very intentionally established and it relates other factor to the film. Although compared to activeness and aggression of Sada we see Ishida was mostly passive most of the time. So allow Sada to strangle him to death in the name of desire and extreme pleasure is questionable also. And it can be seen as also wish to die or an escape. As with feudal background Ishida feared by new Japan, new people and collapsing situation of feudal system. When Sada did not aware of this realm of Ishida, as she was fully under trance of only desire and lust, Ishida grasp the situation and uses Sada cleverly to kill himself. So it can be described as a clever escape from life through desire and submission.
Some other films those dwell in this same kind of Film zone are:“Idiots” by Lars von Trier
“9 Songs” by Michael Winterbottom
“Anatomy of Hell” by Catherine Breillat.

And again the basic criterion to making this kind of film is wisdom, wisdom of life, which is generated from raw life, vast experience. So only with gimmickry this kind of film can’t be made. Attempts are made in some corner of world and delivered a few examples of films mostly with flat result. Nagisha oshima’s film is still unique by all mean and attaining this legacy is not easier to conceive as it looked.
